Fatal Trucking Accidents Decrease in the US

Drive Safely

Here in Buffalo, weather is always a concern for our drivers when it comes to safety. Thankfully we experienced a very mild winter this year and the warm weather has now arrived. We know trucking can be a dangerous business in any season though, that’s why our Buffalo trucking company follows basic truck driving safety precautions.

Technology is helping truck companies to be safer and reverse the negative trends of the past. In a recent report on trucking fatalities it’s claimed that “New crash avoidance technology being installed in freight trucks and passenger vehicles could help bring down the number of injury and fatal crashes in years to come. ATA also says lower speed limits and a national mandate to mechanically limit truck speeds to 65 miles per hour would help.”

In the US truck fatalities are on the decline, but there is still a long way to go as crashes have actually been on the increase. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s latest Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts gives plenty of insight to these trends.

A look at David Cullen’s article, (Fatal Truck-Involved Crashes Drop, But Injury Crashes increase) gives a nice overview of the issue.

Here’s a few of the noteworthy statistics he calls attention to:

  • 37% of all fatal crashes, 19% of all injury crashes, and 20% of all property-damage-only crashes involving large trucks occurred at night (6:00 pm to 6:00 am).
  • Most fatal crashes (84%) and nonfatal crashes (88%) involving large trucks occurred on weekdays (Monday through Friday).
  • “Speeding of Any Kind” was the most frequent driver-related factor for drivers of both large trucks and passenger vehicles, “Distraction/Inattention” was the second most common for large truck drivers.
